A Columbia University App

Based on the most up-to-date guidelines on women’s heart disease, the app empowers women to learn about personal heart disease risk and build a lifestyle plan to stay healthy. This app was developed based on research showing that 90% of heart disease in women can be prevented. The app guides women to answer questions about cardiovascular risk and then provides a heart risk score. It then guides women to choose activities that can have a real impact on good health and reduce risk.

Heart disease is the number one killer of women. One woman dies every minute of heart disease in the US. That’s 2-3x more than die of breast cancer and more deaths than caused by all cancers combined. Still women continue to be under diagnosed and under treated and the number of young women dying of heart disease is on the rise. That’s why you need Love My Heart, an app just for women that recognizes that women’s hearts are unique and that women have different risks for heart disease than men. Developed by cardiologists who specialize in women’s cardiovascular disease at Columbia University Medical Center, the Risk Calculator empowers women to determine their own personal risk for development of heart disease. The Heart Plan then leads women to build a lifestyle plan that will keep their hearts healthy. Up to 90% of heart disease in women can be prevented so download Love My Heart and get started on your path to a longer and healthier life now!

When I worked on this app, I didn’t know anything about hearth disease or any of these statistics. I had to learn quick and began wire framing. I saw early on that this app had to have some gamification aspect to it, so it doesn’t seem like a task for the user every time he/she logs in. The feature we came up with as a monitoring system. A system that monitors the user’s Heart Plan easily to ensure their lifestyle kept their heart healthy. Then we discovered it needed a Risk Calculator that empowers users to determine their own personal risk for development of heart disease - extreme ownership for their decisions. We also created the ability to get the users to follow-through on their goals just by tapping their daily activities. From here, we added a find a doctor section (Cardiolosts), where users can search nearby Columbia University Cardiologists and connect with them if they have questions or to make an appointment. I’ve designed many medical/health and wellness apps, this is by far one of my favorite. It is simple and very easy to use.
